The Cinematic Artist. Gabe Leonard’s paintings take you into a world rich with inimitable atmosphere and narrative intrigue. What tales lie behind these interesting characters? And where will their stories take them?

Gabe Leonard is an American artist who has gained a reputation as one of the most sought-after painters in the world. He was born and spent his early years in Wyoming, where he developed a love of sketching wildlife and exploring the rugged landscapes of the American West. With its extreme environments and beautiful landscapes, the state has deep cultural ties to the grit and grandeur of the American West. It’s these early roots that are reflected in the attitudes and personalities of his paintings. He later earned his BA in fine art from Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio before moving to LA to pursue his artistic career.

Leonard’s signature compositions are deeply cinematic, drawing on the rich history and atmosphere of film. His paintings transport the viewer into an opulent world full of narrative intrigue, where multifaceted characters invite you to learn their stories. His style incorporates expressive runs and drips with figurative and landscape painting traditions, resulting in works that are both timeless and emotionally charged.

Leonard’s approach to painting is deeply rooted in the American and European artistic traditions, drawing particularly on the work of his heroes such as John Singer Sargent, Thomas Hart Benton, Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and Egon Schiele. His paintings often depict characters in transitional moments, leaving plenty up to the viewer’s imagination to interpret. He is particularly interested in the motivations and circumstances that drive a characters’ actions, rather than simply depicting people posing for a painting.
