In his painting Birds of a Feather, we see a rainbow panoply of flamingos, each proudly wearing the color that they choose, including traditional pink. There is no judgement and no separation within the community. The colors shift as they occupy each other’s space to demonstrate that each is willing to observe the world from a slightly different point of view in order to better understand their neighbors.</p> <p>It is the differences and variety of color that makes this image so beautiful and fascinating. In the case the the elephants depicted in Living in Technicolor by Michael Summers, we see an outlandishness exaggerated in the form of bold, technicolor stripes. And yet, it is their similarity to us as human beings that strikes us the most. We equate elephants with ourselves in many ways, especially in their intelligence level, which allows for self-awareness, memory, altruism, and an appreciation for art and music.</p> <p>In this family of elephants, we can see an ideal depiction of wisdom and compassion. It speaks to his personal enjoyment of the painting process and emphasizes the value of humor as an ingredient for appreciating everyday life.</p> <p>Michael Summers, with his academic fine art background, has taken a great amount of consideration to the color, composition, and expression of his work to evoke humor with perfect delivery. Right as Rain is composed in a contemporary style, with a minimalist monochromatic background giving way to a colorful foreground that concentrates the viewer’s attention to, as Summers describes it, “the general adorable-ness of penguins.”</p> <p>Part of the tradition of the Pop Surrealism genre is to humorously challenge preconceptions of “fine art” and the criteria deemed necessary for a painting’s inclusion into this category.
